Shlomo Avineri is a world renowned political scientist. I was fortunate to study under him at the Hebrew University in 1968.
Today he is retired but still active as one of our most respected commentators on global politics. Avineri doesn't comment often in public these days but when he does it's always to the point.
His op-ed yesterday on the worldwide banking crisis is a fine example.
Avineri writes about the U.S and global economy being at a "watershed".
He discusses the "principles that were enshrined as sacred truth" for the past 20 years and how they played out under the current Bush administration.
He characterizes Bush's current response as sounding almost "like socialist heresy".
His final comment is "the unbridled market has proven itself to a god that failed"
